Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous Oxide (also known as laughing gas) is given to your child before a procedure. It is an anesthetic gas that helps reduce the amount of pain or discomfort that a child may have and also relaxes and calms them.  Nitrous oxide is used so that a procedure can be completed with little pain or distress to the child.

Process for giving Nitrous Oxide

• A doctor and nurse will place a mask over the child’s mouth and nose and turn the gas on. Sometimes children can find this distressing, however once the gas has taken effect they usually do not mind the mask on their face.
• Your child will remain awake throughout the procedure and be able to breath normally, they will be able to talk and interact with others. Some children are quite.
• Children should not eat for at least 2 hours before being given Nitrous Oxide. This will help reduce the chance of them vomiting whilst they are drowsy.

After the procedure

Once the procedure is finished the Nitrous Oxide will be turned off and the oxygen will be turned on with the same mask in place for a few minutes.  This will help the body clear the gas and the child will begin to feel back to their normal self. It is common for some children not to remember parts of the procedure.

• Your child should remain lying down until they are instructed to get up and move by a doctor or nurse.
• Your child’s balance and coordination may be affected in the short term and they should avoid any physical activity.
